Thanks for having me in the group.

My name is Dave,I have had tinnitus for 5 years now . It was not so bad at first, I could live with it. But about 8 months ago i stopped sleeping due to stressful events and work etc..

Now I'm suffering from sleep deprivation and cannot find a solution that will allow me to sleep more than 3-5 hrs. My doctor just keeps telling me to take this pill or that pill.

I'm losing my mind trying to find a solution. Nobody really gets it. I'm probably going to lose my job soon because of all this. But I'm ready too if it saves my health. That is most important to me. I'm going to try acupuncture and massage therapy to help relieve my anxiety . Hoping to find help with this locally. Very very difficult because everything is so expensive. Running out of ideas.

Anyway I'm so tired You'd think my body would just sleep eventually. Nights are like torture, the ringing is so bad. Sleep aids are my only solution right now. Try to Habituate and meditate on my own but its very hard. Gonna have to try more things to get this under control. CBT maybe .

Making calls all this week. I'm scared now . Gonna try everything i can . Sleep I miss you

I also went mad, and I am a night owl, but I had to reset myself. I now start at 1030 with long shower to calm down, I also take 2 tyenol pm, I do breathing or little reading, I listen to wind chimes on my sound machine which plays different sounds, get a eye mask to keep the room dark. I switch to ocean. Sounds and I sleep for 7 or 8 hours and my T is moderate and moves around. And for anxiety you have to take of first I adventual had to go to a psychiatrist doc to find the right meds. I hope this helps you.

What medications did your doctor suggest and what have you tried so far?
When I was in a very similar state, three years ago, it took both an AD and 3 mg of melatonin about an hour before bed time to get me to sleep more than 2 -3 hours. Due to sustained stress in my life, my T had increased to a catastrophic level and I experienced severe H for the first time. The thought that these conditions would be permanent sent my stress and anxiety levels into the stratosphere!

When I finally went to my doctor, whom I've been going to for years and I trust, he asked me, "Why did you wait so long?" implying going on an AD.

I suggest that you go and talk to your physician about putting you on an AD for a while. Also, consider trying melatonin (3mg) about an hour before going to bed. They both solved my problem. They just might solve yours.

Good Luck!

Yes they put me on Zoloft for a while but it was killing my stomach and not helping my sleep. They also gave me Valium which I used to fall asleep. I went off the Zoloft a couple of months ago due to the weird side effects. So now I just use the Valium at night but still only get a few hours of rest. Never tried melatonin . Can you use both together? I went back to my doctor last week and she prescribed me Trazadone for a AD and it is just so horrible . Gives you Dry mouth like no other. I tried some herbal tea last night which I fell asleep with for a couple hours then took half a Valium to get a couple more hours of drug induced sleep. Woke up and just had the worst anxiety.

Been up since 4 am. I am calling to try acupuncture and get a massage. Man this is so rough not sleeping. How long were you not sleeping? It's been 6 months for me of crappy sleep. Trying everything at this point with little success . I have to keep trying , I know it. It's just so confusing. Thanks for the advice

awwwwww, that's horrible. I know first how having a lack of sleep feels. Dealing with stress/anxiety is ultra important and i truly wish you lots of luck. Things may not look so great now, but please don't ever lose hope. Life is full of struggles and all of us are trying to be happy and solve our issues.....

Take care

This is a Dr. Ancill's post about his own way to deal with T and sleep. Perhaps try his formula or try to ask him question on how to deal with sleep at the Doctor's Corner.

For prescribed sleep drug, have you tried Remeron which many members have used and posted about? You can search the forum with it and see how others have been helped with it. If you don't like prescription sleep drugs, then Melatonin and other natural alternatives can be considered. Try read this site for recommendation of using herbs for insomnia and calming. Take care. God bless.

@DParker ,

@fishbone is correct, dealign with the stress is important. CBT may help, and I would recommend receiving some sort of therapy as soon as you can. Depression, stress, and anxiety can feed into tinnitus, causing the symptoms to get worse which, in turn, increases your depression, stress, and anxiety, resulting in a vicious cycle; a feedback loop.

Trying to stay calm and maintain a positive attitude are important.

@Michael Leigh wrote the following, excellent post on the importance of positivity: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/is-positivity-important.23150/ and the following on negativity and tinnitus

@Bill Bauer wrote the following post discussing studies that show a fairly high recovery rate from tinnitus ( https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/spontaneous-recovery-stats-over-70-recover-3-studies.21441/ )

There are many other examples on this forum as well.

I also agree with @MBH. Try some relaxation techniques (guided meditation may help) before you go to bed. Like, you, I only get about 4-5 hours per night, usually waking up in the middle a couple times, and doing something relaxing before I go to bed is what allows me to get that much. When I am most successful with the relaxation (meditation or reading) I may even get at solid, uninterrupted, five hours (for the record, I have never slept well but found that relaxation techniques help me to get more sleep, which is how I got my numbers up to 4-5 hours per night).

I wish you luck, please keep us updated on your progress and please let us know what, if anything, does help you as others may beheld by the same methods.

When they gave me nortriptyline to sleep that med didn't help me sleep bad side effects, then I was give Zoloft also I did not sleep went off of that. Two weeks later I went to pysch who put me on lithium and Klonopin but I make sure I take all of it before 5pm I don't won't it to I interfer with my sleep routine. I sleep better when not on medical meds are involved. Once my sleep was under control I'm doing better. I hope this helps you.
