Should I Get Prednisone Two Weeks After Being Exposed to a Loud Sound?

Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Exposure (Headphones)
I've talked in a recent thread about a spike I've been going through where I hadn't been sure of the cause.

There was a loud sound I was exposed to (watching a streaming video on my phone at 35-40% which was still very loud). I think it would make more sense that I got a tinnitus spike from my cold but it's been my hyperacusis that's bothering me more, making my tinnitus super reactive, making sounds that I was previously fine with hurt my ear (previously ear pain was very rare), and pretty much getting tension type headaches that aren't painful but make my skin feel like it's crawling whenever it's not silent.

It has been admittedly almost two weeks now and I feel like I worsen instead of improving.

I'm not sure of your overall history. The loud sound from a phone at 40% volume, imho, is unlikely to be above 100db. Nonetheless maybe you sustained some damage, particularly if you had some prior exposures.

I had a loud incident and do feel sympathy. I will tell you that my ENT told me that there was a window for prednisone which is 30 days.

I personally do not get worked up about taking prednisone, like I can stand the body reactions and do not ascribe to doing possible damage to the body through it, so I guess if I were you and could get some, I'd take it.

Prednisone is heavy duty stuff with many possible side effects, some significant. Be sur to read about all side effects and possibility of vascular issues with the hip.

Perhaps your anxiety and stress over T is causing it to feel like it has worsened?

Prednisone has side effect.
When I had it long ago, my tinnitus got louder the first day of treatment.
If it is from acoustic trauma then take it.
If part of the spike is due to anxiety, it may not help too much.

Prednisone is only helpful for noise exposure after 10 days according to my ent. Beyond that it doesn't do much good.

Did your T go down? I took 1 dose of 60 MG yesterday and my T instantly spiked within an hour. I'm opting to not continue it and hoping it goes down!

Me too. I took the 1st dose then quit. It will calm down within 2 days.
Thank you! I really hope it settles! I was taking it after a loud MRI but honestly my T was quieter before I took the prednisone so I ultimately decided against taking further doses! I just hope it goes back down!

Did you wear hearing protection during the MRI?

Absolutely, I always do. I used foam ear plugs in addition to ear muffs that they provided.

The MRI is what caused your increased T or you took the steroids as a preventative measure and then the medicine spiked it?

Even if it's 100 or 110 dB, exposure to this level of noise for a brief period does not require prednisone. It is a potentially dangerous drug that should only be taken when one has experienced a really loud noise (e.g. explosion of 140-150 dB), or a loud noise for a long period of time.
Plus, prednisone can make your tinnitus worse, among other things. Make sure you only take it if it's advised by a professional.

Yes after my MRI, my T was increased and the ENT prescribed me oral prednisone because of the exposure. I have had multiple MRIs but never one this loud. I took 1 dose of 60 mg prednisone which made my tinnitus louder then the spike from the MRI, so I discontinued the medication. Now I don't know what to do :(

Agreed with this! I took it after a 30-40 minute MRI/MRA which was extremely loud at direction from my ENT and instantly regretted it. :(

Is this the first MRI since the onset of T? or do you just think the machine was way too loud?

For future reference I have heard that there is a "child" setting on MRI machines, which makes them quieter.

No I've had about 5-6 MRIs since onset. This one was just extremely loud in comparison to what I've experienced in the past. I'm not sure if it's an older machine or what but it was sooo loud! I just really wish I wouldn't have even tried the prednisone..

For reference, I received my first mri almost 3 years ago after my tinnitus started and they found a lesion in the right frontal lobe of my brain. They still aren't sure what it is but it is either a lesion that oozed blood or an actual brain bleed which left scar tissue in my brain. I've been dealing with an uncertain diagnoses for 2 years now and continue to have testing but there are only theories, no solid answers.

Also, I'm going to ask for the child setting and see if that's possible for my next MRI! Thanks for letting me know!

I'm sorry to hear about this. Waiting to find answers is the worst part of any medical diagnosis and adds to frustration! I also recently received a diagnosis for something that has been seriously bothering me and puzzling my doctors for almost 10 years. Ironically another family member who had similar issues eventually led to the right diagnosis.

I'm glad to hear that not all MRIs caused you spikes though and only this one noisy machine. I have to get one soon and am a little nervous about it myself.

I personally use ear plugs in addition to ear muffs and ask for Valium before the procedure, otherwise I freak out from the noise. I have had spikes from MRIs in the past that last a week or so but eventually taper off. This one seems to be from the prednisone.. so yeah. What a pain.

I hope you're able to get answers for your condition as well! What caused your tinnitus?

I am not sure what caused mine. It could be a wide range of things, but i'm not sure. I've had it ever since I can remember. I suspect it started from a lot of ear infections as a kid which led to tubes being put in my ears. I don't know exactly though. :/

We will never know in lots of instances I suppose. They still don't know what caused mine for sure, either. I believe it's the lesion in my brain but my dr doesn't think so.

The unknown can be very frustrating, but try not to dwell on it because what is done is done. We just gotta move forward.

This is true, but very very hard to live by! I am constantly second guessing my decisions because of this :(

Me too. I always ask myself, "Will I regret this later?".
