Standing Tall

I spoke with someone a while ago that has had tinnitus for just seven weeks. He says his life is in turmoil and it's over. Many of us can relate to that and fully understand how he feels. We often say in this forum tinnitus gets better with time and most people habituate withing the first 6 months to a year.

Doctors say the same so it must be true. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case as everyone is different but with time and patience, a lot can be achieved. This gentleman went on to say whenever he's around people he can't help looking at their ears and thinking, how lucky they all are not to live the rest of their lives with this dreadful noise.

Negativity on a large scale I thought but totally understand as I'm sure many reading this post will. At this point I decided to inject some positivity into the conversation in an attempt to restore some balance.

Life is problematic I said and you have no idea what another person is going through. For it is said, believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear. I spoke about the young man I recently saw in my neighbourhood walking with his guide dog early one morning. I was touched by the experience and wrote about it.

I explained about positivity and tinnitus, and the need to focus on the positive things in life as it will help the habituation process. He has a loving wife, two kids a nice home and a business; now he's hit a brick wall since tinnitus.

I was asked do I know anyone else with the condition. I told him about some of the people I've counselled (mentioning no names) how they've got their life back on track and as a bonus they've become a stronger person. They, and I believe it doesn't matter how many times you have been knocked down, it's getting back up and standing tall that counts.

Michael

PS: The person in question telephoned me recently and has habituated to his tinnitus and is enjoying life to the full.
