Tinnitus Week 2020: Help JimH Fly Us to Vancouver

Discussion in 'Awareness & Fundraising' started by Tinnitus Talk, Feb 2, 2020.

We’re a lot more than just a forum.

We’re a community of people with tinnitus who help each other. We produce Tinnitus Talk Podcast to keep you up-to-date on all things tinnitus. We create videos to raise awareness and push for better care. We are actively engaged in tinnitus research, working directly with numerous scientists and gathering data to move research forward.

This year for Tinnitus Week (3-9 February), we are focusing specifically on research and we have a whole bunch of activities lined up.

How do we do all this?

With a group of dedicated volunteers. None of us draw a salary.

But we also have expenses, and our income (mostly from member donations) does not cover our expenses. Which means we end up paying some of it out of our own pockets.

One of our long-time and esteemed members @jimH has very generously offered to match any donations we receive during Tinnitus Week up to $500USD. We feel humbled and grateful by this kind gesture. By doing this, he is following in the footsteps of the amazing @Starthrower, who initiated something similar last year.

Below is a breakdown of our estimated expenses for 2020.

      tinnitus-talk-costs.png

In particular, we would like to make sure that we can attend the 2020 Tinnitus Research Initiative (TRI) conference in Vancouver.

We would like to be your voice at the conference, to make sure that our perspectives, as people suffering from tinnitus, are heard. And we will report on the conference of course. Please help make this possible.

And remember, @jimH will match your donation. THANKS, Jim!

Please join me in supporting this year’s fundraising initiative! I will match donations up to $500 USD. Once that level is met or exceeded, I will make my donation. If you donate, please post the word “Donated.” There’s no need to post the amount. This way you’ll receive some well deserved recognition. In addition, it will bump the thread to keep it more visible in the “New Posts” section.

Tinnitus Talk means a lot to me. That’s why I’ve been financially supporting it every year since I joined in 2014. I discovered it when I needed it most. That is, when my Tinnitus and Hyperacusis were at an extremely severe level. I immediately I felt some psychological relief just knowing that I had found other people that knew and understood what I was going through. I no longer felt so isolated and alone. I know that it has helped many others in the same way.

Additionally, I found that there was no better place to keep up to date as to the latest research and developments regarding the treatments of Tinnitus.

That said, TOGETHER, we can make this fundraiser a success! Thank You!

      Hey all,

I just want to add here that I totally understand if donating money to a forum might not be your top priority. We know from years of experience that many people with tinnitus don’t even donate to tinnitus research, so why donate to us? Good question…

Well, it could just be because you find Tinnitus Talk a valuable resource, as I hope you do. Behind the scenes we are keeping the site clean and well-organised, so you can easily find what you're looking for, which takes many volunteer hours and money.

Or maybe you’d like to see more awareness about the awful toll tinnitus can take on a person? Last year I interviewed the mother of Gaby Olthuis and we published this video, which details how tinnitus and hyperacusis can drive a person to want to end their life. Expenses for the production were about 500 euros, which I paid out of my own pocket.

Or maybe you value tinnitus research? In that case, you might prefer donating directly to a research cause, which we welcome and applaud. But did you know that we ourselves conduct research? We gather large-scale data; our latest survey (on physical links to tinnitus) got nearly 7,000 responses, which is a true treasure trove for research. We also work directly with researchers to include patients in their studies; some exciting stuff coming up in that regard during Tinnitus Week!

Paying for me, or another volunteer, to fly to Vancouver, I get it if that sounds frivolous. But I worked my ass off at TRI last year to get as much reporting to you as possible and made valuable connections with the research community. And I will do so again if you help me get to Vancouver. But what I don’t want to do (again) is pay it all out of my own pocket.

And finally… What we need just as much as money is your skills and time! It’s another great way to contribute. Just click the “Volunteer” button on our homepage if you want to know more.

I want to thank everyone who has donated so far!

Right now we are at $1312 after 29 donations. Still far short of the goal of $2400. If you have not yet donated and can afford to, please do so. Thank you!

This has already surpassed our expectations by a lot! Thanks @jimH for being a wonderful human being, and thanks to all who donated, however big or small.
