Sadly that is so true. I was with the doctor today after getting my MRI results. He said we've run out of things to check. Push the sound away........yeah right! Then compared it to a damaged body joint. Yeah right again..... he means well but f#ck.
I wrote to our health department over loud noise at concerts and there being no warnings or max db levels. 7 weeks later get a handballed response making it my issue. Aaaaaaarhhhhh. My T was so avoidable with a tad of education.

Well honestly I might get off tinnitus talk completely, the negativity is just to much, guess what I might have found the source of my t, I say might because after visiting my tmj specialist and doing all the test and what not he found my joints are not lining up correctly, specially my left side which is where my t is, after years of clenching and grinding what might have triggered it was the root canal I had done a month a half prior to my t began, my crown wasn't properly seated for over a month making my jaw not align properly.

So it might be the cause if might not, the specialist says he is pretty sure it is, specially after all the other tests I have gotten, my t does get quieter when I sleep on my right side, so I've started treatment for that, I'm for one I'm not giving up, I know there will be a cure at some point most likely within 5 years or at least a treatment and a cure within 10 for sure.

This is an problem that is growing by leaps and bounds and is costing the governments billions in disability payments just on the war veterans alone. Not to mention all the kids and young generation that due to earbuds, beats and what not have also messed up their ears.

I'm glad you found the source and hopefully it can be corrected. I'm glad you are not giving up but please remember you are only a few months in, for those who have been in this nightmare for years....it is harder to be hopeful. It is for me anyway because I have spent thousands of dollars on dozens and dozens of various treatments and after awhile you do start to lose hope.

Its taken decades to try and find a cure for cancer and arthritis and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. To name just a few so a cure for tinnitus is no exception. Sorry to put a downer on this but realistically that is the bottom line.

Unlikely to be a cure, not when the likes of Autifony and all their scientific expertise has failed so dismally.

I am finding it increasingly difficult to feel optimistic

      Yes.
I read that stem cell research is showing great promise in some areas. Also I read that, I think it was just a few months ago, that there's been shown a way, or a med, that finally can cross the blood-brain barrier. If tinnitus is something deeper in the central nervous system then maybe some kind of pill is on the way.

stop saying there will be a cure in 20 years as a layman, when so many experts say tinnitus will never be curable (in our lifetime)

My ent said:,, they said we will have a cure for tinnitus in 10-15 years, 20 years ago. they say every year there will be a cure in 20 years''

There are tens of millions people with this condition, many of which are prepared to pay a great deal to rid themselves of it. Pharma companies aren't just going to sit around twiddling their thumbs.

"Cure" is a strong word, but there will be treatment...

We have yet to "cure" the common cold (but we sure can treat it), while we're on the subject of "cure"

Unfortanatly that is what several experts and specialists said to me also.

They also said that it is quite possible they find a drug that treats the symptoms and lower the volume somewhat, although that probably comes with a price as most brain altering drugs do, they barely scratched the surface of tinnitus pathology and research is still in it's infancy.

But who knows, science does not stand still and maybe one day, we can only be hopefull.

How can you guys be so pessimistic ? Maybe I will be too after so many years of T

Medicine isn't something straight but there are people working in order that we get better. I wish I had numbers which would say how much is being spent on research today compared to 10 years ago.

I can't see how there could not be any relief in a 20 years timeframe (10 might be short). However I would not say the same for a total cure.

20 years is ridiculous. I think we'll have a clinical application available to the public in 7-10 years max. As for how effective the treatment is, it could be of slight benefit or a total cure. I just know there's big pharma moving into this and where there's money to be made in untapped markets, those guys won't give up on making big bucks as the tools to target it expand.

Well hello there im pretty new on this site so i have 1 question for all of u suffers.
as im pretty bad om english and have hard to understand medicine terms and stuff, so im asking u now

Do u think there will be a cure for T before 2020? i have t for like 13 years now and in my left ear i only heard it when it was silence in the room. now 2 months ago i got in my right ear a high pitch of biizzzz that i can hear everywhere no matter what i do... and my hearing is good aswell..

Have u guys had louder T in the beginning that is lowering down the sound after a while but never gone away?

Sorry for the bad english, i hope u understand!

Cure in 20 years? Yes, definitely. I doubt it will come to every kind of tinnitus though. Hearing loss related T may take a little longer till they improve stem cell theraphy.

Effective treatment - in 5-10 years. We have already Trobalt. We know how to reduce tinnitus but for a limited time and horrible side effects. I can hear some saying "We have benzos for a half century but still no cure you d*ckhead!" Calm down mate. I know benzos can do magic but NOT for every kind of tinnitus. Retigabine is something very special in the game. Look at the Users Experience Thread in the forum. Many of different types of tinnitus but almost everyone had some reduce in their Ts.

So I DO believe we are so close to a relief.
      Stay in the game :beeranimation:

No there will definitely NOT be a cure before 2020. Any medication /medical device needs various stages of being tested before it is available for patients. Even if they found something to cure tinnitus tomorrow it would probably take around 3 - 5 years until it would be available to us. And how big are chances researchers find a cure tomorrow?

Too bad the vast majority of T is hearing loss induced, I guess.

This is all guess work but I don't think there will be a cure in 20 years because the workings of the brain are too complex. Scientists don't know enough about the mechanism of tinnitus to know what to target for a cure. However, having said that, sometimes drugs can work, without knowing how they actually do the job. This is true for a lot of antidepressants. So it's possible that a trial will bring about a surprise positive result, at any point. Many discoveries were made as if by accident (eg penicillin). It could be that tinnitus reduction becomes a secondary side effect of a new drug to treat some other condition.

If they would asked this question 20 years before you might have been right. But we already have retigabine. It works on almost every kind of tinnitus. This is huge. If we can lessen its side effects we will have an efficient treatment. And this is what we can call a "cure".

Retigabine is just shot gunning the problem with lots of side effects, wouldn't really call it an"effective"treatment.
