After reading all these comments I think I’m much better off without this site and the people on it. I’ll be making this journey myself. Good luck everyone.

Unless he can prove his 20dB hypothesis or emotions making tinnitus louder, this thread needs to be changed immediately, it seems like an ignorant practitioner.

They have no idea what a chronic tinnitus sufferer deals with on a daily basis. True our emotions can play a role however it is not as simple as saying forget it and you will not hear it. Just plain insulting to all us that suffer with this condition. If that is what the experts are telling researchers we have no real hope.

I can understand why you feel that way, and I'm sorry about it.
This is not about you. It's very valid frustration about an all-too-common perspective in the medical field.
Regardless of what you choose, I wish you the best.

hey man, I advocated for you. TBH it's not really you that made the claim. What that "doctor" told you was super wrong. You just related it to us with great hope. Please allow us to repent of our nastiness towards you and hang around.

I consider you a fellow sufferer. I never had any problem with you at all. I've been wrong about this disease many times. We all owe you an apology. Like I said, the nastiness wasn't about you as a person, but that so called "doctor" really did give you a load of horseshit and they are supposed to be authorities.

to the rest of you, don't shoot the messenger. have a heart, this man is suffering with this disease just like the rest of us. this thread is a good opportunity to realize that we owe kindness and respect to our fellow sufferers. we are all on the edge emotionally that is for sure.

I think you're taking this the wrong way. Think, most of us here are having a really bad time, like yourself. Any info here can be handy, just bear in mind, from what I've learnt having this shit for the last 5 weeks, there's a lot people out there just haven't got a bloody clue what the impact this does to our lives. It's not taken seriously enough.

We do realise that you only wanted to take us one step forward and we also understand you also need results, like the rest of us. Unfortunately it's too slow, it's simply pathetically slow.... Chear up, hang on, we all need to give ourselves a bit of advice/opinions and I'm sure yours can be very handy. Not this post though...

      Hello @Adamwynn ,

I'm sorry that you got jumped on like this. I know you we're just trying to bring some good news to the forum - which I always appreciate. :)

While sites like this are a great resource for support, research, and connection with other people who have Tinnitus and Hyperacusis - it can also be a place where a lot of RAW emotion is expressed. For a lot of people on this site, many are struggling - with many just trying to get by in life. Additionally, many people on this site have also dealt with an ENT who has either not taken them seriously, given them wrong information, or caused them additional harm (i.e, further aggravated their T or caused H). I know you were just trying to help, but when people hear that an ENT says that their condition is X db and they just need to get over their emotional response to it - well it can cause some heated emotion.

I myself have also dealt with ENT's who while are EXPERTS in their field, but know NOTHING about Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. I'm lucky now where I have a very wonderful ENT who helps me out when and however she can (i.e. manual ear cleanings and check ups), but also knows when to refer my questions back to the Tinnitus clinic here in Vancouver since it is outside her scope of knowledge - which I always appreciate.

I do hope that you still decide to be apart of this community. We need to be sticking together and pushing for further T awareness, research, and movement towards better treatments besides what's available now.

Wishing you all the best buds! :D

      Hi @Adamwynn,

I'm sorry to hear how much this thread affected you, and that you'll be leaving--hopefully just taking a break--as a result of the responses you received. As a number of people mentioned, the "exasperation" expressed in this thread was not about you. Instead, it's mostly about the personal and frustrating experiences members here have had regarding the lack of some basic understandings on the part of health professionals we deal with, and who are supposed to be helping us.

Your ENT's perspective has an element of validity to it, as emotions and our reactions to tinnitus do influence how much it affects us. But most of us here realize tinnitus and/or hyperacusis is soooo much more complex than that--thus the reactions that you seemed to experience as perhaps a bit overwrought. -- I sincerely hope you continue to pursue all different kinds of approaches to improving your tinnitus. I think the more open we are, and the more things we try, the better we can tilt the odds of improvement in our favor.

      Wishing you all the best!

The part about emotions is correct. Any of us here know that. It doesn’t take a medical degree. Experiencing a panic attack can turn 1/10 to 10/10 in a matter of seconds for example.

However, just being unemotional or ambivalent about T isn’t going to change the perceived volume, stop it from spiking, getting worse temporarily or permanently. The 20db statement is just so obviously ridiculous.

If only there was some way to make doctors experience T as part of their training. Maybe make them wear headphones playing T sounds for a couple of weeks (at a safe level)? It would make them so much better and less likely to say utter nonsense like Dr Quack.

I wouldn’t particularly take exception to those really. The decibel part has some truth to it if he’s talking about the sensation level, but he doesn’t go into enough detail about what he said. Also, our brain does have a strong emotional connection with interactions via the amygdala, nucleus accumbens, VTA, caudate, putamen, etc. Our entire limbic system can be tied in with the processing of the tinnitus percept. Many studies have been done using tests like fMRI’s and EEG’s to see which areas of the brain light up under various stimuli.

I think the glaring error is to say that anyone can tune it out to silence like it’s no big deal. However, we also have to accept that we are not hearing this message directly from the horses mouth. Details are easily lost in translation and we may be going a little overboard considering none of us have actually heard what he said. It’s like playing Chinese whispers.

I fully agree with you @Jazzer It is nice to see someone seeing things the way I do regarding tinnitus and the people that know about it. A lot of people with tinnitus, believe ENT doctors are tinnitus experts and they certainly are not. As I've mentioned in a many of my posts, the majority of them know very little about it. They are physicians and may indeed be experts in the field of ENT: Ear, Nose and Throat but not tinnitus.

I wish some people would stop giving these doctors a reverence for something that they do not deserve.

I’m sorry you feel you need to leave this site.If your Doctor gave you some HOPE in how to manage your T then that is priceless. Some of the negative comments are possibly because it’s really not an easy condition to live with and overcome. You may be someone who can habituate and go on to live a happy life. I wish this for you.

Best of luck to you Adam.
I think you have to realise that Tinnitus is the greatest obstacle to us folks leading a peaceful and happy life.
When a ‘specialist?’ comes out with this kind of tripe it is infuriating and demeaning to those of us that suffer so much and so long.
To be fair, I was given similar advice at the ENT unit in Kings Cross.
I did not swallow it, or believe it, and I was right.

A few members on this site reiterate this kind of drivel also, but by and large, we are knowledgeable, experienced (unfortunately), and always ready to help with our suggestions and with kindness.

But when a so called specialist ranks “T” on a par with chilblains, when it’s more akin to gangrene, we understandably go apoplectic.

      Very best wishes buddy.

Good choice. While ultimately I agree with everyone's points, we don't need to pick on other people. Sometimes I need to remember this too.

I think if you really want to be healthy and positive then getting off here is the best choice. A lot of us are not in our best frame of mind.

Ahahaha that is complete fucking bullshit! Those of us with tinnitus like a Pixies song, LOUD day then quiet day know that there is a massively difference the emotional reaction the two cause. I think stress does affect my tinnitus, but it clearly varies massively day by day for no apparent reason.
