MODERATOR NOTE: Read the whole thread. Apparently Dr. Drew's success came after taking Fluvoxamine, and not the COVID-19 vaccine, like @PortugalTheMan had misunderstood. The thread title has been adjusted to reflect this.

It would be so nice if this was my success story, but it isn't, and I'm still a long way from that. In fact, I'm having a hard time right now.

But it's always nice to see success stories, and the story I'm talking about is Dr. Drew's.

Dr. Drew on January 30th caught COVID-19 and had several symptoms, including severe tinnitus:

On February 17, 2021, after getting the COVID-19 vaccine, his tinnitus was cured:

Does this mean that those who acquired tinnitus from COVID-19 now have hope of their tinnitus being cured after getting vaccinated?

Dr. Drew has had tinnitus for years, it wasn't just from COVID-19. I can recall an episode of Andrew Santino's podcast where he mentions that.

I thought he wrote this in response to someone talking about Fluvoxamine?

Looks like his tinnitus might have gotten even worse from COVID-19. But this stuff healed even his original tinnitus? Hmmmm.

The COVID-19 vaccine sure as hell didn’t cure mine. The 2nd one gave me a spike!

It’s crazy to think the vaccine would alleviate his tinnitus while causing others to get it for the first time or make existing tinnitus worse or do nothing at all.

It makes me wonder if future treatments or cures will work for some but not others.

Well, am glad he is not dealing with it anymore. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.

      Take care everyone!

Sounds weird. I’ve seen accounts of tinnitus caused by COVID-19 cured by the vaccine. Yet the vaccine is causing it for some as well. Nothing makes sense.

So the quote was taken out of context and it was the first dose of Fluvoxamine and not the vaccine?

Here is the tweet that started the conversation and some of the rest of the conversation.

      dr-drew-fluvoxamine-covid-vaccine-tinnitus.png

The other MD's first tweet was a response to Dr. Drew and two other people, but I'd have to scroll all way through his tweets back to February. And he tweets A LOT. I gave up after scrolling through June.

I don't know what went into his decision to start Fluvoxamine. Maybe he heard it helped with long COVID-19 symptoms or something.

Sorry, friends. But the news I read said he was cured by the vaccine. But from the tweet it seems to be Fluvoxamine. Is it better to change the title? It is still a success story.

      Moderator note: thread title adjusted.

Any other news on this? I know it's only one anecdotal account of this stuff helping tinnitus, but I'm contemplating bringing it up to my doc at my next appointment.

Antidepressants have helped me a lot, but I want to switch my current AD as I cannot handle the other side effects any longer.

      What are you currently on?

This just looks to be a run of the mill SSRI that does nothing else.

I think SSRIs definitely are not my friend after my night last night.

I did use alcohol, but it was the night from hell, I don't even think distortions cut it... absolutely nuts. Random sound effects mostly when attempting sleep.

FWIW, Dr. Drew said the tinnitus came back in a video he did, but he did say it was at a lesser level than before. So "resolved" is a bit misleading. But still, lesser level is great.

@Jon R., and at how much of a lower level? Not sure why he wouldn't be more specific on the effect...

Just the Nortriptyline. It's not really doing it's magic anymore though. I took 1 dose of Zoloft back in the beginning of my tinnitus and worried that it made it worse so didn't take it again. Mine seems to be very sensitive to medication. I feel like everything I take aside from tylenol and my asthma meds make the hissing louder and unpredictable. I did take Wellbutrin for a about a year a few years ago and had no problems with it, but that's not an SSRI.

I'm usually very anti-SSRI, but I'm curious on whether or not Fluvoxamine is different in any way to the other mainstream SSRIs you hear about, generally badly, on this website. Is the mechanism of Fluvoxamine different in any way?

@Jon R., just to update: on a more recent podcast appearance with Andrew Santino, Dr. Drew confirmed he fixed his tinnitus and that it's in the past.

@Uklawyer, from what I remember it was just Fluvoxamine and some long-COVID-19 treatment (supplements, monoclonal antibodies, etc)

@evrmre - how does this relate to what @Jon R. said above? "Fixed" as in there is still some but it is much better now? Or now it has completely gone?

@Uklawyer, because he said that Dr. Drew mentioned that the "the tinnitus came back in a video he did" - but I clarified that a more recent video confirmed it's 100% gone now.

@evrmre, thanks. Sounds encouraging. I wonder if anyone else has since taken Fluvoxamine with positive results...
