      Funny,
I work for a University, having a chat with an older student (50s) and she told me she had tinnitus for the longest time. She said it went away when she cut down on her coffee intake.

She was like, "yea maybe it's that. Well, good luck!"

Just thought I'd share! Remember that it can go away for some people! Hope you're all having a good day, my T says hi too lol

I've heard that coffee makes it worse. That coffee makes it better. That coffee has no effect whatsoever. I DO love that word, though ... COFFEE. Siiiiiiiiiip!!! :)

Caffeine, which is included in coffee, affects our central nervous system acting as a stimulant and promotes mental performance. The ringing you hear is most likely part of that neuronal network that is affected therefore causing a more noticeable ringing sensation.

As I absolutely without a doubt believe that the ringing you hear is involved with hidden damage to our auditory system. When caffeine is introduced into the brain, chemicals are affected and therefore the brain works at a higher level. The areas of the brain that have been damaged and possibly are inflammed or are missing appropriate neuronal connections are most likely affected by these risen levels of neurotransmissions and causes you to "hear" the ringing more because the brain is trying to "hear" sound with the damaged auditory locations.

I'm not a scientist and I like what you say. I would add that the brain is so complex, so who knows with regard to how one person is affected and another not by caffeine, different foods, etc.

It's been linked (if not proven) that regular coffee consumption can reduce the chance of getting Parkinson's. Ritalin, a stimulant, is used to CALM the symptoms of hyperactivity. It's all so complex, with so many factors involved.

I'm not trying to shoot you down Ricardo. I'm just letting you know what the ingredients of Coffee actually do to you. I'm glad you're searching for new ways to try and lower your ringing though.

Coffee has actually helped me out slightly (and when I say slightly, I mean the smallest amount noticeable) by acting as an antidepressant since it raises levels of nuerotransmitters in the brain and raises levels of cortisol, serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine.

Has your ringing affected your daily life? Has it caused any mental issues for you?

Thankfully coffee doesn't seem to affect my tinnitus. I have cut down a bit though and don't drink it after 5pm because it can be hard enough getting to sleep without caffeine.
I think we can cut out a lot of the joy in life by banning ourselves from taking things we love. Life is hard enough with T without denying ourselves the few pleasures we have left☺

@Nick Pyzik at first yes, not so much now.
I mean, some days it bothers me; some days it doesn't. It doesn't really even sound like ringing most of the time. It sounds like static with a high pitch white noise in my right ear, sometimes my left ear 'winces' like I can't figure out how to describe it. Like it's quiet and then a tiny tiny tiny tiny little 'ee' jumps out of nowhere, almost like keys jingling for a split second.
But I understand where you're coming from. Coffee makes no difference to my tinnitus.
Also, I don't believe mine was caused from sound exposure. I mean, yea I wore headphones before but never went crazy on it. Also, I only have hearing loss in my right ear; but I'm not sure how long I've had that for lol.

Yes, exactly. That's why I stopped worrying about what this or that will do to me. I just resume life as it was. Yea, it sucks because of this weird thing we have.

@Mario martz No, my left ear is the "good ear" but no hearing loss. But I still have weird tinnitus sounds in it.

Well put. Thanks for the insight Nick.

I am fine with a cup of Java in the morning but if I have a second coffee (like the Grande I just drank), it goes through the roof!!

Wait, what do you mean you have hearing loss in your right ear but you don't know how long you've had it?

I've always been hard of hearing in my right ear. I think that came about from when I was a little kid my brother threw a ball at my ear and I had tinnitus for a day and it was gone.
I knew that my right ear always had trouble. I never had a hearing test before so I can't say that this is what's causing my tinnitus. I have tinnitus in my left ear too but there's no hearing loss there.

I have had tinnitus since 2009. Coffee intake decreases my morning loud tinnitus. This was explained as a possibility because blood flow is restricted/decreased by the caffeine to my ears. It makes sense to me and I find it works when I get up in the morning.

However, sometimes certain coffees like Starbucks, will significantly have an impact on the loudness or piercing sounds in my brain in the later afternoon.

I was told the processing of the beans has something to do with it.

Wow, that's very interesting. I'd do my usual rambling about what could of possibly happened to cause Tinnitus for you but I'll save it for another time.

      Hi Ricardo,

Oh after 14 years I am so living life again. I don’t use the term habituated. I just feel it is the wrong term and puts this stigma on each of our recoveries. Almost makes that feeling of unworthy come into play. And I found my tinnitus took away most of my self confidence back in 2002. Then add on to it someone saying you will habituate...blah blah...I never felt I could and it threw me into more despair. I would think there was something wrong with me because I could not "habituate".

But that was so long ago it takes me some time to remember things now.

Patience. Which isn't easy when one's brain is hyperactive. When the stress and anxiety disables you. When there is no place to turn for help and the places one did go to would make you feel even worse.

The journey.....I read recently someone said the journey is what the prize is all about. Something like that. I think it was on the show Survivor when one guy got voted off.

We all have one hell of a journey....but for me now life is back and I go on with so much difference which I would never had found. Yeah....I know. Like is that really important? I mean, crap, why did I have to have a journey in the first place. : )

Go ahead, I'm not gonna get mad.
I mean, there could be a million causes for my tinnitus. For instance, I had a ton of pain in my jaw hinge the night before it happened. I also bleached my hair for 2 hours, I went outside in the snow with wet hair, I was really pissed off the day before; the list goes on! lol

Coffee ... Coffee is medicine to me. It brings my vocabulary back. Until I see my doctor, now that my insurance is straightened out... I have been on hold for two years with my health insurance. *rant alert*

I had insurance but couldn't see my doctor, because she wasn't on my plan. I couldn't see the doctor I was assigned to, because those appointments are months away. With my insurance on hold, I couldn't afford to see a new doctor, but I still could not see the doctor I have had for over ten years. Thank you, affordable health care!

      Rant over.

Now that my insurance is straightened out. I wait for my insurance card so I can make my first appointment. My two biggest health issues are thyroid and tinnitus. My adult daughter asked me what I was going to do about my hearing loss. See my doctor. Get a referral for audiologist for hearing aids. And... Hopefully get my thyroid medicine going again. Then I can drink less coffee... You wondered when I would get back to coffee...

I do have a question. I'll post it here and as a new post. Which doctor is the most important, or the first I should see about tinnitus and hearing loss: the audiologist or ENT? I'm excited to get started on hearing what I need to hear again!

What do you mean, "brings back your vocabulary"? Do you mean your cognition improves from the use of this wonderful stimulant?

You know, I notice that if I eat anything, both of my ears plug up and I get a spike. Not sure why.

With low thyroid I forget words. Sometimes I can start a sentence and forget the end of the sentence before I get there. Or as I'm talking, the next word is just gone. My vocabulary goes bye-bye... Pathetic. Coffee brings it back.

      Does that make sense!
