Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Black and orange stray cat sittin' on a fence
I ain't got enough dough to pay the rent
I'm flat broke but I don't care
I strut right by with my tail in the air

Stray cat strut, I'm a ladies cat
I'm a feline Casanova, hey man that's that
Get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man
Get my dinner from a garbage can
Don't go crossing my path

I don't bother chasing mice around
I slink down the alleyway looking for a fight
Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night

Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry
"Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy"
I wish I could be as carefree and wild
But I got cat class and I got cat style

I don't bother chasing mice around
I slink down the alleyway looking for a fight
Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night

Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry
"Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy"
I wish I could be as carefree and wild
But I got cat class and I got cat style

Shout out to all my peeps in A̶g̶n̶o̶s̶t̶i̶c̶s̶ Atheists "R" Us...

Did you ever read Voltaire's Candide?
He says live life at Benny Hill freak out speed
Not a quote of what he wrote but a paraphrase
Make it up as you go Keyser Soze
Highlights yes but don't underline 'em
Just live for N.O.W. like Gloria Steinem
Life is like Marion Berry
It's not all that it's cracked up to be
Like Fred Sanford when the big one comes
Find the meaning of life is there is none
It's twenty-four hours when you call it a day
Be Frank and say I did it My Way
Don't give a Flying Nun no don't give a Gidget
Just have more fun than a well-oiled midget
If life were picture perfect you could frame it
But the world is a diaper so let someone else change it

Life is an aimless drive that ya take alone
Might as well enjoy the ride, take the long way home

All born equal, unless you're Canadian
Then halfway through decay like Uranium
You define what's death defying
Get the most out of life or at the least die trying
Are you Evil Knievel jumpin' a train?
Or runnin' with scissors like Frasier Crane?
Have really good times doin' really bad things
'Cause the show ain't over 'til the fat lady sings
Like Elton John with his Candle In The Wind
It's hard to blow out a flame as big as him
But we've all got to Wang Chung with the Grim Reaper
Whether you're Einstein whether you're Beaker
Death is certain so it's definitely worth flirtin'
Don't expect a bright light, no, just curtains
Life is like a penis most people don't know it
But most people suck so they usually blow it

Life is an aimless drive that ya take alone
Might as well enjoy the ride take the long way home

Life is an aimless drive that ya take alone
Might as well enjoy the ride take the long way home

Put it down on the floor in a glass bowl
You take some fuck
Put it up on the wall where the shit used to be
You take that fuck up off of the wall
Put it down on the floor
With the shit in a glass bowl
What? Yo
Here's another little piece of advice-vice
You take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
Take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
It's a stack of fuck-shit on top of itself, nigga
I make references to weaponry
Ancient or new
I wear bullet-proof vests for no apparent reason
Other than to create a false sense of importance
Of which I could never retain on my own
I like to create a buffer memory of incredulity
So y'all motherfuckers could never get near to me
I'm a cartoon character
You'll never be able to be like me! (me me)
I like women
I like women
I like the concept of a woman
I like to take that concept and reduce it to an object
I like to take those objects and put 'em in my videos
Have them shake they jiggly bits so they looks like hoes
I like to take some car polish, smear it all over they asses
And buff that shit out so it looks like fresh peaches and shit
I like to take some more of that car polish and smear it all over they tits
And buff that shit out so it looks all sparkly, like
Diamond necklaces and shit
Why?
Cuz I'm a lady's man
A lady's man
A la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lady's man
I'm a materialist
I'm a materialist
I'll take a piece-of-shit car and I'll lower the motherfucker
Put some 18-inch rims on the motherfucker
Take some neon, put it underneath the motherfucker
So when I roll around this town it looks like I hover (hover hover)
I like to take a flat-panel display monitor
Put one on the steering column
One inside of the glovebox
One on top of the dashboard
Two in back of the headrests
One mounted in the ceiling
Two still in the motherfucking packaging, on the back seat
So when my motherfucking friends go and sit on the shit and break it (word?)
I can honestly say
I, just, don't, give, a, fuck
You take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
Take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
Take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
Take some fuck then some shit
Then some fuck then some shit
You've got a fuck-shit stack
A fuck-shit stack
It's a stack of fuck-shit on top of itself, nigga
Yo, where my girls at?
Where my girls at?
Where my grills at?
Where my grills at?
Where my girls at?
Where my girls at?
Where my grills at?
Where my grills at?
(Where is they?)
Fuck shit, fuck shit (yeah)
Fuck shit, (ha ha) fuck shit (shove a)
Fuck shit, fuck shit (on top of itself, nigga)
Fuck shit, fuck shit (word)
Fuck shit, fuck shit (yeah)

Shit motherfucker ass tits cunt cock
Motherfucker shit ass tits
Motherfucker shit
Shit motherfucker ass tits cunt cock
Motherfucker shit ass tits
Motherfucker shit

A fuck-shit stack
Take some fuck then some shit

I can't expect you to see (Me when I'm not around)
And my voice is destroyed (By confinement of sound)
I'm a human machine (Laced with hidden disease)
If the future looks bleak (Then you're connected to me)

Flesh into gear
Myself appears dissected and pretentious
A simple sound a heavy sigh
Could win the whole world over
You live in fear of being someone that you didn't want to
I realize your insecurities will get the best of you

A traitor's embrace (How foolish how wrong)
Contained in one place (Anxiety spawns)
Unopened re-owned (What's needed upscaled)
Digested inhaled (Unwilling unwound)

Flesh into gear
Myself appears dissected and pretentious
A simple sound a heavy sigh
Could win the whole world over
You live in fear of being someone that you didn't want to
I realize your insecurities will get the best of you

Flesh into gear

Without bad there's no good, without wood there's no fire
Without the hood the posh house price wouldn't be higher
No stronger no weaker, no stupid no deeper
No dick dropping rubbish there's no work for street sweepers
Without life there'd be no death
And that I don't stop the pain
Just concentrate on the memories they left
When I'm looking at the stars I realise
I'm just a speck on the Earth's surface
I measure my worth by my intellect
We've all got a purpose, some people got three
Some people fall in line and others have got dreams
We all do our best with the tools we were given
Shit my hammer and chisel is this life that I'm living'

Everybody's got their problems
Everybody says the same things to you
It's just a matter how you solve them
And knowing how to change the things you've been through

I feel I've come to realize
How fast life can be compromised
Step back to see what's going on
I can't believe this happened to you
This happened to you

It's just a problem that I'm faced with - am I
Not the only one who hates to stand by?
Complications that are first in this line
With all these pictures running through my mind

Knowing endless consequences
I feel so useless in this
Get back, step back, and as for me
I can't believe

Part of me, won't agree
Cause I don't know if it's for sure
Suddenly, suddenly
I don't feel so insecure

Part of me, won't agree
Cause I don't know if it's for sure
Suddenly, suddenly
I don't feel so insecure
Anymore!

Everybody's got their problems
Everybody says the same things to you
It's just a matter how you solve them
But what else are we supposed to do?

Part of me, won't agree
Cause I don't know if it's for sure
Suddenly, suddenly
I don't feel so insecure

Part of me, won't agree
Cause I don't know if it's for sure
Suddenly, suddenly
I don't feel so insecure
Anymore!

Why do things that matter the most
Never end up being what we chose?
Now that I find no way so bad
I don't think I knew what I had

Why do things that matter the most
Never end up being what we chose?
Now that I find no way so bad
I don't think I knew what I had

The building turned it's back, ignored my call
The concrete looks too thin to break my fall
The sunset stretched across this nighttime scene
I counted people as I neared the street below
Whoa-oh-oh
Below
Whoa-oh-oh

I saw it all, I saw it all go down
The shadow grew as he approached the ground
The sunset stretched across this nighttime scene
They turned away as he came near the street below
Whoa-oh-oh
Below
Whoa-oh-oh
Below

Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on
Let's forget this all, move on

Funky President- James Brown

Funky down, nasty
Hey! listen to the man!
Rap godfather
Payback! Cold blooded!
People, people
We gotta get over before we go under
People, people
We gotta get over before we go under
Hey country, didn't say what you meant
Just changed the brand new funky president
Stock market going up, jobs going down
There ain't no funky job to be found
Tax keeps going up
I changed from a glass, now I drink from a paper cup
Gettin' bad
People, people
We gotta get over before we go under
Listen to me
Let's get together and raise
Let's get together and get some land
Raise our food like the man
Save our money like the mob
Put up the fight and own the job
Tell 'em godfather
Turn on your funk motor
Get down and praise the lord
Get sexy, sexy
Get funky and dance
Love me, baby, love me nice
Don't make it once but can you make it twice? I like it
People, people
We got to get over before we go under
People, people
Well, well, well, before we go under
Turn on your funk motor, I know it's tough
Turn on your funk motor, until you get enough
Hey, give yourself a chance to come through
Tell yourself, "I can do what you can do"
Hey! listen to the man!
Rap godfather
Payback! Cold blooded!
People, people! Oh!
People, people! Hey!
People, people
Don't you see what's going on?
People, people
We got to get together! Oh!
Get on your good foot! Huh! Change it!
Got to get together and get some land
Raise our food just like the man!
Hey-hey-hey-hey-hey
I got to say it again
We got to get together and buy some land
Raise our food just like the man
Save our money, do like the mob
Put up your fight and own the job
We got to get over before we go under
C'mon, let's do it, oh Lord!
Country do you know just what I meant?
We just changed, got a brand new funky president
I need to be the mayor
So I could change a few things around here
I need to be the governor
I need to be the governor
I need to be the governor

And if they get me and the sun goes down into the ground
And if they get me, take this spike to my heart and
And if they get me and the sun goes down
And if they get me, take this spike and
You put the spike in my heart!

And if the sun comes up
Will it tear the skin right off our bones?
And then, as razor sharp white teeth
Rip out our necks, I saw you there

Someone get me to the doctor
Someone get me to a church
Where they can pump this venom gaping hole
And you must keep your soul
Like a secret in your throat
And if they come and get me
What if you put the spike in my heart?

And if they get me and the sun goes down
And if they get me, take this spike and

Can you take this spike?
Will it fill our hearts with thoughts of endless night time sky?
Can you take this spike?
Will it wash away this jet black feeling?

And now the nightclub sets the stage for this
They come in pairs
She said, "We'll shoot back holy water
Like cheap whiskey, they're always there"

Someone get me to the doctor
And someone call the nurse
And someone buy me roses
And someone burned the church
We're hanging out with corpses
And driving in this hearse
And someone save my soul, tonight
Please save my soul

Can you take this spike?
Will it fill our hearts with thoughts of endless night time sky?
Can you take this spike?
Will it wash away this jet black, now?

And as these days watch over time
And as these days watch over time
And as these days watch over us, tonight
And as these days watch over time
And as these days watch over time
And as these days watch over us, tonight

I'll never let them, I'll never let them
I'll never let them hurt you, not tonight
I'll never let them, I can't forget them
I'll never let them hurt you, I promise

Struck down, before our prime
Before you got off the floor

Can you stake my heart? Can you stake my heart?
And these thoughts of endless night (Can you stake my heart?)
(Bring us back into the light)
Can you stake my heart? (And this venom from my heart)
And these thoughts of endless night (Can you stake my heart?)
Bring us back into the light
Can you stake my heart? (And this venom from my heart)
Can you stake me before the sun goes down?

And as always, innocent like roller coasters
Fatality is like ghosts in snow
And you have no idea what you're up against
Because I've seen what they look like
Becoming perfect as if they were sterling silver chainsaws
Going cascading

Lou Reed - "Walk On The Wild Side"

Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
Said, "Hey, honey
Take a walk on the wild side"
Candy came from out on the Island
In the back room she was everybody's darling
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
Said, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
And the colored girls go
"Doo do doo do doo do do doo..."
Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place
Where they said, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey, Joe
Take a walk on the wild side"
Sugar Plum Fairy came and hit the streets
Looking for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should've seen them go, go, go
They said, "Hey, sugar
Take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side", alright
Huh
Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that bash
She said, "Hey, babe
Take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey, honey
Take a walk on the wild side"
And the colored girls say
"Doo do doo do doo do do doo..."

Down at the bottom of the garden
Among the birds and the bees
A little lot of little people
They call the Poddington Peas!

There's Creepy, Black Eyed Pea and Dumpy
Keep it a secret now please
There's Zippy, Happy and there's Sweet Pea
And all the Poddington Peas!

The Poddington Peas!

Favourite lyrics for me would have to be from Depeche Mode songs. They weren't as popular by the time I was old enough to appreciate them but their songs really spoke to the teenage me. Favourite album - 'Violator', I don't think there's a bad song on it.

"Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world"
- Enjoy the Silence

"You wear guilt
Like shackles on your feet
Like a halo in reverse"
- Halo

"Let me take you on a trip
Around the world and back
And you won't have to move, you just sit still
Now let your mind do the walking
And let my body do the talking
Let me show you the world in my eyes"
- World in My Eyes

Go son, go down to the water
And see the women weeping there
Then go up into the mountains
The men, they are weeping too
Father, why are all the women weeping?
They are weeping for their men
Then why are all the men there weeping?
They are weeping back at them

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the men and women sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long

Father, why are all the children weeping?
They are merely crying son
Oh, are they merely crying, father?
Yes, true weeping is yet to come

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While all the little children sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long

Oh father, tell me, are you weeping?
Your face seems wet to touch
Oh then I'm so sorry, father
I never thought I hurt you so much

This is a weeping song
A song in which to weep
While we rock ourselves to sleep
This is a weeping song
But I won't be weeping long
No, I won't be weeping long
No, I won't be weeping long
No, I won't be weeping long

The Weeping Song - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

I spent the whole day in my head
Do a little spring cleaning, I'm always too busy dreaming
Well, maybe I should wake up instead
A lot of things I regret but I just say I forget
Why can't it just be easy?
Why does everybody need me to stay?
Oh, I hate the feeling
When you're high but you're underneath the ceiling
Got the cards in my hand, I hate dealing
Yeah
Get everything I need, then I'm gone
But it ain't stealing
Can I get a break?
I wish that I could just get out my goddamn way
What is there to say?
There ain't a better time than today
Maybe I'll lay down for a little, yeah
'Stead of always trying to figure everything out
And all I do is say sorry
Half the time, I don't even know what I'm saying it about
Good news, good news, good news
That's all they wanna hear
No, they don't like it when I'm down
But when I'm flying, oh, it make 'em so uncomfortable
So different, what's the difference?
When it ain't that bad
It could always be worse
I'm running out of gas, hardly anything left
Hope I make it home from work
Well, so tired of being so tired
Why I gotta build something beautiful just to go set it on fire?
I'm no liar, but sometimes the truth don't sound like the truth
Maybe 'cause it ain't, I just love the way it sound when I say it
Yeah, it's what I do
If you know me, it ain't anything new
Wake up to the moon, haven't seen the sun in a while
But I heard that the sky's still blue, yeah
Heard they don't talk about me too much no more
And that's a problem with a closed door
Good news, good news, good news
That's all they wanna hear
No, they don't like it when I'm down
But when I'm flying, oh, it make 'em so uncomfortable
So different, what's the difference?
There's a whole lot more for me waiting on the other side
I'm always wondering if it feel like summer
I know maybe I'm too late, I could make it there some other time
I'll finally discover
That there's a whole lot more for me waiting
That there's a whole lot more for me waiting
I know maybe I'm too late, I could make it there some other time
Then I'll finally discover
That it ain't that bad
Ain't so bad
Well, it ain't that bad
At least it don't gotta be no more
No more, no more, no more, no more
No more, no more, no more, no more

Mac Miller - Good News

Wonderful thread that I'm now bumping a little late! Music has always been the most important thing in my life (until tinnitus), so I have so many song lyrics I love and adore. But here is one from my youth that still resonates a lot with me today. During the years (as with great literature and movies) the meaning of the lyrics changes for me - depending on my life circumstances, challenges, fears, doubts, worries, joys, etc.

At the moment, I cannot even listen to the song due to tinnitus but also because it is simply too emotional for me to listen to a piece of music from a period of my life where life was simpler, I was young and carefree, and while I had problems back then, they were nowhere as heavy as they are today. But every word from the song is forever in my mind, so I can easily "hear it" inside when reading the lyrics.

Smashing Pumpkins Tonight, Tonight

Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave
Without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change, the less you feel

Believe
Believe in me
Believe, believe
That life can change
That you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
Tonight

And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade
In your city by the lake
The place where you were born

Believe
Believe in me
Believe, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
Tonight
We'll crucify the insincere tonight
(Tonight)
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
(Tonight)
We'll find a way to offer up the night
(Tonight)
The indescribable moments of your life
(Tonight)
The impossible is possible tonight
(Tonight)
Believe in me as I believe in you
Tonight
Tonight, tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Kansas - The Wall

I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see
The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall
And with each passing day I feel a little more like something dear was lost
It rises now before me, a dark and silent barrier between
All I am and all that I would ever want to be
It's just a travesty, towering, marking off the boundaries
My spirit would erase

To pass beyond is what I seek, I fear that I may be too weak
And those are few who've seen it through to glimplse the other side
The promised land is waiting like a maiden that is soon to be a bride
The moment is a masterpiece, the weight of indecision's in the air
It's standing there, the symbol and the sum of all that's me
It's just a travesty, towering, blocking out the light and blinding me
I want to see

Gold and diamonds cast a spell, it's not for me to know it well
The treasures that I seek are waiting on the other side
There's more that I can measure in the treasure of the love that I can find
And though it's always been with me
I must tear down the wall let it be
All I am, and all that I was ever meant to be, in harmony
Shining true and smiling back at all who wait to cross
There is no loss

Late Lament Lyrics from The Moody Blues.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one;
Lonely man cries for love and has none;
New mother picks up and suckles her son;
Senior citizens wish they were young

Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey is yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion
Nights in White Satin immediately segues into this poem. This is also another favorite song of mine.

Here's a song I discovered last week. It's a rap song, of all things — not a genre I normally gravitate toward, but I couldn't help but fall in love with it because it is about perseverance and neuroplasticity.

On a good day, I play it on the lowest possible volume, On a bad day, I'll play it on mute.

I won't post all the lyrics here, just the part that I like best:

You got a mind, but even that can change
You can flip the gray matter like some batter in your brain, ah
That's why they say, fake it 'til you make it, ay
And if you play that game, then you just might make a change
Rearrange all the bad to okay
Take the worst thoughts and turn 'em to a game
Take the best thoughts and put 'em on display
On repeat in your brain 'til you're feeling no more pain, uh
Never slow yourself down, you can do some more
Push past all the pain and you'll find a door
Open it up and finally explore
Everything that you thought, you could never do before, ah
Even when you feel low, you can still go
Even when you feel slow, you can still go
Even when there's no hope, you can still go
I never answer to no man, I still go

Complete song (with captions) is here.

Only You by The Platters.

I sing this a lot at work.

Only you can make all this world seem right
Only you can make the darkness bright
Only you and you alone can thrill me like you do
And fill my heart with love for only you
Oh, only you can make all this change in me
For it's true, you are my destiny
When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
You're my dream come true, my one and only you
Oh oh, only you can make this change in me
For it's true, you are my destiny
When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
You're my dream come true, my one and only you
