That sounds incredible! I've gotta fly to the States soon anyway, so maybe I'll try hit up some places.

Btw - off topic, but why did they give you Doxycycline?

There is an abandoned Wizard of Oz theme park a few hours from me. If I ever get better, I plan to head out to it.

When I was in the Chi area, I explored things like ornate old multi balcony theatres (including one in the Gary, Indiana area where Michael Jackson performed with the Jackson 5), old warehouses (best place for graffiti art by far), a few abandoned train yards in Wisconsin.

I live in a much quieter area now (but close enough to a city if I need it). My preference now is nature and I will take that over urban exploring personally but I definitely thought it was fun while I did it on my small scale.

@Steph1710, where I'm from (New England) we had a lot of abandoned spots. Like psych wards with bad histories, that sort of thing. So many mills too, and old air field towers. Sadly most of that stuff has been since torn down. I liked mills in particular. It sucks though when enough people go there and do bad things that it gives more incentive for them to knock places down. Ruins it for people just wanting to explore.

I did a horror photo shoot at a recently abandoned mall and got yelled at haha. Made friends with security at the air base so they looked the other way. These places are the best for photographing people.

Down south it's a lot spookier. I don't get out much of course but there are a lot of old ramshackle houses in the middle of nowhere. Really wish I could get out and take a look.

I am envious of the UK and Europe for its antiquity though. Even coming from New England, it feels like the stuff there is so babyish. It's a shame stuff has been torn down :/

And yes. The deeper you get into a community, the more stringent and gatekeeping it becomes. Takes the fun out of it.

Vermont, and, thanks, but, it is a bit depressing: I am teaching our child to ski this year, and at the same time fairly certain commercial skiing will cease to exist here within her lifetime. Along with all the other chaos that will come from mass death and diaspora as particular heavily-populated regions become uninhabitable, globally.

So, yea, smoke 'em if ya got 'em, and ski the snow while it exists :-/

I was on Doxycycline for my eyes too! Mine was ocular rosacea and dry eye.

Trust, it was the Doxycycline that gave me the tinnitus.

Bet you're on a low dose as well - 50mg?

I also have dry eye, well Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. I've taken A LOT of Azithromycin for it throughout my life. As for the Doxycycline, I'm supposed to be taking 100mg twice a day for 5 days, but I only followed those instructions once. I've been basically taking 1 tablet a day. Yesterday I didn't take any, but my eye is looking a little puffy again today so I guess my body needs the help...

I’ve been looking through these photos and my heart absolutely breaks for everyone affected by this horrid condition. It really does make you realise that the people on this forum are humans whose lives have been touched/altered/devastated by this evil affliction.

This was September when all this was relatively new and I thought it’d go away. I don’t smile anymore, but my boy is the reason I’m still here.

@FGG, you are a girl after my own heart.

The places you've explored sound incredible - I'm very jealous!

I am a nature girl too. Place me up a mountain or in a forest, and I'm right at home.

This is making me SO jealous! We used to have a lot abandoned psych wards, but sadly, most have now been torn down.

In fact, since England came through the "recession", most abandoned places have been torn down and redeveloped into more unaffordable housing - yay!
Urgh! Tell me about it. Occasionally I've hit the exploring jackpot, and found places that haven't yet been touched, but they're few and far between. Best one ever, was an abandoned mansion right where I live. I'd been playing in the grounds, and the pleasure gardens since I was little, but never managed to get into the main house. However, one day I did!
And why haven't you shared any photos with us of this shoot?? :p I wanna see!

Yeah, abandoned places used to get all the goths having photoshoots in them haha. I love a goth. My mum was one.
This makes me want to fly to the States and go exploring with you. Whereabouts are you? Of course you don't have to say if you don't want to. I understand - not everyone likes to disclose where they live... Plus I might come murder you - ya never know ;)
Yeah, I have to admit, I do chuckle to myself when they mention on American programmes how old a place is, and it's built in like 1890... I swear my grandmother is older than that! Obviously she isn't, but you get the idea. America is definitely not synonymous with old.
And yeah, I can't be dealing with the politics of things. I'm just here for a good time.

And sorry about not replying sooner - I totally missed your post. It was so interesting as well. There seems to be so many like minded people on here. It makes me want to meet you all!

Well, I'm making a small step in being less ashamed of my disability by posting some pictures. I figure, if any loved ones see these, they will already know who I am from seeing enough of my posts to make it to this point.

The first picture is after my wife and I successfully had the offer on our first home accepted. I was quite happy here. I had battled chronic illness all throughout grad school, did well in a competitive interview process, and landed the job I wanted. My stressful year was almost over, with the only main obstacles left being closing, finishing my thesis, defending, and moving. My wife (hidden for privacy) also succeeded under difficult circumstances. At the time of this picture, if you would have said the word "hyperacusis," I would have said "what's that?"

The second picture is in month 15 of hyperacusis. I had started steroids a month ago and increased my LDLs from essentially 0 dB to around 20-30 dB. I had to turn the window unit off to play Scribbage with my wife. I'm surprised I look so happy, as that was far from reality. I think maybe I believed that steroids were going to keep improving my LDLs, but they pretty much leveled off right around the time of the picture. My cat is happy as can be. She loves games where she can try to knock the pieces around.
