    Short answer is nobody knows for sure. In my personal experience, I never had fleeting T until I had actual T. However others have had fleeting T before getting actual T.

    @Drone Draper I think normally people mean fleeting tinnitus that lasts seconds. Before I got constant tinnitus, I would sometimes get fleeting tinnitus that lasted about 30 seconds, starting loud then fading out. I never had constant tinnitus.

    ...is normal up to 16k Hz (29 y.o.). But I generally have mild imbalance since ever and tinnitus started in the most quiet period of my life (no concerts etc). Also I get many fleeting T. So I suspect, for me it is something genetic (my mom also has T) or an atypical form of hydrops. Who knows.

    What I believe you encountered is fleeting tinnitus. Lots of members with tinnitus get them. Sometimes they last seconds or longer. It usually settles back down. Just make sure to protect from loud sounds and don't use earbuds or headphones even at low volume.
