In my experience hearing protection doesn't stop spikes. It just takes the spike down a notch from where it would have been with no protection. So it's not a catastrophic spike, but a bad one; not a bad one, but a moderate one; and so on.

I get you @Sodlin, and do understand the feeling. I've been there numerous times myself, with numerous spikes/setbacks - several of them long lasting (close to 6 months at the worst). What I've learnt though is that the longer you feel this way, the longer the spike will stay. This will pass too.

I'm glad to hear you're making progress! Hyperacusis spikes are normal, especially when you're re-acclimating to sound. I had a setback in August where I couldn't tolerate the sound of human voices even with earmuffs, but I kept my protection at the minimum needed to avoid pain, and the spike...

Thanks for the uplifting spirit. Been 3 days now and its still roaring in one of the ear :/ I seem to never manage to "keep calm" during these spikes and somehow subconcius get anxiety ridden over them. Think i should have learned after all these years! Yes overfocusing sure makes them worse!

...the nature of tinnitus @Sodlin Ups and downs. Dont let the downs get to you too much (easier said than done, I know), and they will usually be way more shortlived. That has been my experience. Hypervigilance and overfocusing on the spikes make them tenfolds worse. Remember, this too shall pass.

...last "panic attack" that i had phonophobia. Just remeber that i have it when i hear a "loud sound" actually cancels the panic mode for me to know that i just "use my brain wrong" and this have worked VERY well over this 2 past weeks and as a result from that i barely had any long lasting spikes.
